Frequently Asked Questions

About the Sport

What is World's Strongest Hands®?

World's Strongest Hands® is a grip strength competition open to kids, teens, adults, and seniors. Competitors are placed in fair categories based on age, weight, and gender, making it an inclusive sport where anyone with two working hands can participate.

How does it work?

A custom device measures and records your grip strength. You'll squeeze with both hands, and your scores are combined into one total. Competitors are grouped into categories by age and weight, and the top two in each category face off for the prize.

How did World's Strongest Hands® come to be?

Most sports are limited to people with specific physical abilities — height, speed, coordination — and professional athletes represent the absolute elite. But here's what makes hand strength different: approximately 75% of the world's population has two working hands. That's nearly 6 billion people who could potentially compete.

What other sport has that kind of universal accessibility? By creating fair categories based on age, weight, and gender, World's Strongest Hands® allows kids, teens, adults, and seniors to all compete on a level playing field.

Eligibility & Categories

How do I qualify to compete?

It's simple! You need two working hands and must choose a gender category (Male or Female). Kids, teens, and adults must weigh at least 75 pounds, and seniors must be 55 or older.

What are the age and weight categories?

Full categories are listed on our Registration page, including weight divisions for kids, teens, and adults, and age divisions for seniors. Both Male and Female divisions are offered for every category.

What if I'm on the border between two weight categories?

No problem — we'll help you find the right category at registration.

Competition Day

What should I expect on competition day?

Check in at the event, confirm your category, and get ready to compete. Competitors take turns at the device, with each squeeze recorded. Friends and family are welcome to come watch and cheer you on.

How long do I have to complete my grip test?

Each squeeze takes less than two seconds — just enough time to give it everything you've got.

Are there any rules during the squeeze?

Yes — your event instructor will walk you through the rules at the competition. They're simple, designed to keep things fair for everyone.

Can friends and family come watch?

Absolutely. World's Strongest Hands® is a family-friendly event, and spectators are always welcome.

How long does the competition take?

It depends on how many competitors are registered. Most events run a few hours from start to finals.

Prizes & Records

What prizes can I win?

Prizes vary by event and depend on the number of competitors and sponsors. Details for each competition are announced ahead of time.

Are there records I can try to break?

Yes — and we maintain a leaderboard of top scores by category.

Training & Practice

How can I train to improve my grip strength?

That's up to you! Many competitors train with hand grippers, weighted carries, or general strength work. There's no required training program — just show up ready to squeeze.

Can I practice on the device before competing?

Limited practice time may be available at the event. Check with event staff when you arrive.
